first week as a graduate

so…my first week as a graduate. to say the least, started off extremely boring, but definitely picked itself up. i started the week off going on chat roulette with my room mate. it’s such a waste of a time, but it so frickin’ addicting. honestly, about 80% of everyone on there is a bunch of pervs but you do get some regular people to talk to. but yeah, first couple days of the week were very wasteful. i did accomplish one big goal this week and that was to create the artwork for our “save the date” wedding invites. we are screen printing them and basically are going to use a colored paper and will use two different screens. i’m actually pretty stoked about them. planning on going to utrecht this weekend to pick up a couple screens to get cracking on these plus going to hollows paper store to get the paper we need. what else…oh! i started working on a website for my freelance design. i have a personal site, but want to make this more business-like. i’ll share with you the name and ideas once i buy the name. ;) other than that, i’ve been working, looking for jobs and i am almost done with two books i started; those books being “abraham lincoln vampire hunter” by seth grahame smith and “tell all” by chuck palahniuk. both pretty darn good book! that’s all i got for now. i’m gonna go look for more jobs now!

what is going to happen to me now?

life has been good. i won’t go into detail now but in the near future i have so many options : may be going to grad school as a grad assistant in the fall, and have the opportunity for a couple jobs, which i will not name (although large places) :) unless i decide to go for it.

so how excited am i to be done with school? so much you couldn’t imagine. i mean, sure i have a couple days left for presentations, but basically i am done. i’m proud of my portfolio and definitely have some nice things in it, but now that i am finished with school, i can finally do stuff i enjoy. i already started and i haven’t even graduated yet. i’m finally doing the type of illustrations i enjoy plus i am creating my first typeface. i don’t know how well it will come out, but so far the sketches look sweet. creating drop caps, lowercase and uppercase and some glyphs. i’m really excited about it. i’ll start posting my progress in the coming week. it has a whimsical, classic kind of look but still a modern flare. well, thought i’d update you all. i’m very excited to start showing you all new things. cheers!

OH PS! saturday night going out to celebrate graduation. if any of you are interested in going message me!

last blog for web class. not the last of me.

well let’s see here. school is coming to a close and i must say i am glad that the projects are finally dwindling down. i’m not sure exactly where my priorities are because i have my iphone app finished to when it’s not due until thursday. i have a packaging project due tomorrow and i still need to create my process boards and photograph by product. although, he did say he was going to give us extra time if we needed it. i must say, this semester went by pretty damn fast but feel that i have a lot accomplished. i created some pretty sweet packaging (at least in my eyes) and FINALLY have a better understanding how to make a website and actually see it work. i still have a long ways to go to get where i want, but it’s getting there. let’s see, what else? the portfolio show went great and it was great seeing everyone at the opening. i gained some great feedback about my work and the show in general. a lot is going on though. i’ll be graduating may 8 with my bfa and *fingers crossed* will be going back in the fall for my masters. i need to call back for a summer internship and will let you all know how that goes. but that is that. nothing too exciting really. well, there is, but i’m done writing. goodbye.

how awesome is this. if you love type and are proud of where you live, this is pretty darn cool. ork posters! there aren’t a lot of cities done at this time, but the owner Jenny Beorkrem has been making these posters now since 2007. you can click on the image and go to their website or just go to orkposters.com. i dunno, i’m gonna keep this short. just thought that this was really cool being a type lover myself.

randomness.

so i had something i was going to write about and now i forget. been happening a lot today. but let’s see. i’m sure i can think of something to talk about. maybe my original idea will pop back in my head while i type this. nope, it hasn’t. ya know though, i do know something to talk about. this damn senior show. this show has taken up so much of my time it is ridiculous. i know it’s worth it in the long run, but jeez, i have not been giving my classes my all lately because of this show. well, today i finished it all so i can get back on track. got all my self promos finished, printed out 100 resumes to put on my table, my business cards are on their way to my house and yeah, the portfolio has been done. i must say i’ve been on a roll here. i’ve basically been in the same spot for my packaging project for the past two weeks and tonight alone created a box for my packaging as well as my labels. quite a bit done i must say. now, web class. i really need to research iphone apps because i feel like i’m in the stone age because i really don’t know what apps are all about. i don’t use them, so i’m not familiar with them. all i know is that you can probably “get an app for that” for just about everything. i want this project to be great though because i wasn’t in love with my last project. i really wish i could remember what i was going to originally write about. it was quite interesting. that part i do remember. oh well. i have this show that i recorded, so i’m going to watch that right about now. so you all have a good one and i’ll catch ya on the flip side.

team usa is going down…that’s where they’re going

what better to talk about than the most recent web assignment. i was so excited to make a music social networking site and am still stoked about it. it’s not exactly at it’s best right and in no way would i be totally proud to put it  on the web and be proud to call it mine, but i really like the direction it is going. if it weren’t for the senior portfolio, i know i could have blown this project out of the water. i was working on the first page for better part of the project and realized i only had a couple days left to have seven working pages finished. wow, so…starting at 5:30pm until 3am I worked and worked on that website to make it function as well as possible. i’m not that dissapointed with it. i actually really like where it is going. there are some things i plan on tweaking to give it a more polished look, but for what it is, i think i did a pretty good job. before this class web 2 class i really didn’t care to do much web work. honestly, i didn’t care to do any web work. i’m loving web right now, but i still have a plethora of information to learn. i’m acquiring some pretty sweet 3d and filming programs as well, so i’ll be very happy to learn how to work on that. life is a constant learning process and i’m just starting.

dunkin’ donuts

so i feel like a tool. the dunkin’ donuts was an april fools joke…oh well. i liked it.

not sure as to how  many of you saw this, but i thought this is great. celebrating their 60th anniversary, dunkin’ donuts has gone for a redesign. it’s not much different than their logo from the late 1950’s and 1960’s. their is a ton of merchandise available for this. if you’re interested in looking more into this design just type in dunkin’ donuts redesign and you’ll be sure to find something. i love this though. i’m all about vintage design as well as turning a logo and giving it a classic style. this is so much more friendly than their recent typographic solution which has been out for awhile. enjoy this! take a look around at the new merchandise and go get some donuts! :)

senior portfolio. dun dun dunnnn

the time came. time to drop off the good ol’ portfolio. i’ll be honest, i wasn’t nervous at all putting this thing together. i was pretty confident. but let me tell you. as soon as i was getting off the freeway, going towards the school, i could feel my heart beating faster and faster. i wasn’t to the point of fainting, but i’ll admit, i was a bit nervous. none of us will know the outcome until tomorrow, but i’m still staying confident. after the portfolios were dropped off, steve, mitch and myself went for a cup of coffee. took the mind off the portfolio a bit. i still have way too much to worry about. need to work on my self promo, business cards and still some projects for other classes. it’s all good. i’ll tell you that much. i’ll let you mr. tumblr know the outcome tomorrow…or whenever i decide to post another blog. :) cheers, for now.

paul sahre

alright, so i really had to think about this one before i wrote it. before going in to this lecture, i wasn’t too impressed with paul sahre. i did think he had some really cool projects and some really nice outcomes, but i wasn’t that into it. i wasn’t following some of the type solutions, illustrations and whatnot. even while he was talking, i was letting my earlier opinons get in the way. so, i slept on it. i thought about it. i really think paul sahre has some really nice things. i didn’t see a structure in a lot of the stuff he did, but truthfully, there really was. before i saw it more as an art piece than a design piece. but really, why can’t design be art? seriously. think about it. although his stuff does has an order to it and it does follow a grid, he does some have some “out there” pieces. people mocked artists throughout the centuries and look what they redefined. all i’m saying is, i respect the guy. although i’m not 100% on his boat, looking at his stuff, hearing him speak and really thinking about what i heard, i found it very beneficial and will definitely work more on expirementing than playing it safe. it was a good time. saw some old kent class mates, heard a good talk and came up with some nice sketches for my packaging project as well! paul sahre, thanks for coming. you were a really nice guy and hope to run into you again sometime. i shall end with a quote taken directly from paul from last nights show. “move to new york. fuck cleveland.”
